NOS: Households keep lots of money in bank account: 'Gives us peace of mind'

The Dutch have started to save much more in recent years, but at the same time leave 116.4 billion euros in their checking accounts, new figures from De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) show. With 8.4 million households having an average of almost 14,000 euros in a checking account. Why do people have such a high amount in their checking account? And why is this not in a savings account including savings interest? Colleague Ruth Dijkstra from the Knowledge Center provided context and explanation of these figures in this article.
